Potions are an integral but often overlooked part of life in the Wizarding World. The magical world that lies just beyond the reach of Muggles is born out of many mysterious disciplines. Looking past the exuberant wand-waving and spell-casting is a more precise art. One where magical properties of objects are dissected,
While there is a long list of potions commonly used by the Harry Potter wizarding community, several have gained infamy for their potent effects. Here are a few of the most well known Harry Potter potions.
Felix Felicis
Fancy taking on an impossible task? Felix Felicis might be a brew of interest.
The potion is also known as liquid luck. As its nickname suggests, it grants its drinker significantly good fortunes. The time span of its effectiveness varies depending on the amount ingested. It goes without saying that this potion is banned in all exams and competitive events. Known side effects include giddiness and overzealousness.
It is also known for being one of the most difficult potions to brew. The potion requires adherence to a complex formula that must be followed precisely through the course of six months with the tiniest error bearing tremendous consequences
Polyjuice Potion
Polyjuice potion is the second to last ally of those hoping to remain concealed. There is perhaps no greater tool that allows one to stay hidden in plain sight than the legendary Invisibility Cloak. This potion allows a drinker to fully take on the appearance and voice of another person. It requires a little bit of the person being impersonated, and for this purpose strands of hair are oftentimes the choice bits.
With regard to its unique characteristics, the potion’s characteristics vary with the person being impersonated. It is also known for being exceedingly complex and takes a month to brew.
Veritaserum
This potion’s name derives from the old Latin tongue “veritas” which means truth. Veritaserum is a truth serum of the greatest potency known to the Harry Potter Wizarding World. A mere three drops are sufficient to force anyone to respond to questioning with the truth.
The use of this potion, like many others listed, is regulated by the Ministry of Magic. And while highly potent, a skilled wizard may guard against its effects by having an antidote ready or by Occlumency.
Amortentia
This draught is more commonly known as the love potion. However, Amortentia does not truly create love, but rather an extremely strong infatuation. It is more than able to change the behavior of the individual taking it. A person’s treatment of another may change from being completely indifferent to being smitten head over heels.
Among its unique properties is that its scent changes depending on who gets a whiff of it. It takes on the aroma of whatever attracts that person. However, the potion must be regularly administered or the effects wear off.
These are only a few of the many potions that can wreak havoc if misused. Always be aware of potential repercussions when using these potions. When in doubt, consult a potions master before attempting to brew or consume these.
